I’ll give Maverick credit. He’s sticking to his word. After hours of arguing with Skye, he’s coming up to my room to talk to me. I’ve tried focusing on my homework to tune them out, but it’s been difficult. I know their fight is my fault.

“May I come in?” He knocks and pokes his head through the door.

“Yeah.” I shove some of my school books aside and sit up on my bed. “Are you and Skye okay? Sounds like you were really going at it earlier.”

“Don’t worry about us. We’ll be fine.” Maverick sits down on the ottoman at the foot of my bed. “I’m sorry, sweetheart, but I have to agree with your mum.”

“Wait, what?” I thought he would be on my side? I came up the stairs expecting him to be because Maverick always fights for what we want! Why didn’t he fight this time? “I-I don’t understand. Why am I not allowed to see the papers?”

“I’m just going to be honest with you.” As Maverick scratches at the stubble from his shaved beard, I notice dark bags are forming under his eyes. They must’ve grown within the last couple of hours while he’s been arguing with Skye.

His calm voice somehow sends relief through me. “We both went over your care file and adoption papers together in great detail when we adopted you. We also went through it again just now, and I have to agree with Skye. You will not find your answers in them.”

My heart sinks even further. “Oh… w-what do I do now?”

“Is there something I’m missing here?” Maverick rubs the back of my hand with his thumb. “Care to explain what’s going on here, Red? I mean, really going on.”

Oh boy, how do I tell him? What do I tell him?

“Ugh, it’s no use,” I sigh helplessly. “I have no idea where to start.”

“That’s okay.” A small smile etches onto the edge of my father’s lips. “Why don’t you start with what you’re feeling right now? I can tell something’s bothering you and putting a name on this emotion you’re feeling will help, believe me.”

“I don’t know anymore. Everything just feels so confusing and messed up.” It’s as though Maverick has turned a tap on inside me. I can’t keep hold of my thoughts or tears anymore; it all comes flooding out. “Ever since I’ve been back, it feels like everything’s changed. I don’t know who anyone is anymore because everyone remembers the last two years, but I don’t! People also seem to think that if they treat me exactly like I’m the person I used to be, then I’ll magically remember something, but that’s clearly not working! And
